    What is PTSD?PTSD and Cannabis

    • Two or more arousal and reactivity symptoms, such as having angry outbursts, experiencing difficulty sleeping, feeling tense or on edge, or becoming easily startled
    • Two or more mood and cognition symptoms, such as loss of interest in activities that once were enjoyable, having distorted feelings (blame or guilt), feeling negative about the world or oneself, and having trouble remembering key features of the stressful event

    Many treatments and therapies are available to help cope with PTSD, such as anti-depressant medications or medications to help treat sleep disorders. However, many of these medications can lead to unwanted side effects that can worsen the condition or reduce your quality of life.

    How Does Cannabis Improve PTSD?PTSD and Cannabis

    Research shows that cannabis is a more natural way to help treat PTSD – and the best part is that it’s highly effective. Not to mention, cannabis offers other health benefits, too.

    According to one study, long-term cannabis users were 2.57 times more likely to no longer meet the standards or qualify for a PTSD diagnosis when compared to those who did not use weed, including that cannabis may be used as a natural way to treat PTSD.

    Researchers noted that weed helped users dramatically reduce their PTSD symptoms, which may include flashbacks about the event, negative thoughts, anxiety, and sleeping problems.

    Users in this study were observed for one year and accessed every three months. This data suggests that using weed long-term may be the key to finally overcoming PTSD symptoms, especially if you have tried other medications without success.

    So, how does it work? According to one study, cannabinoids reduce activity in the part of the brain associated with fear and our response to threats called the amygdala.

    Fall Cannabis Recipes to Warm the Heart

    The hot summer sun has made way for the upcoming sweater days and bright, turning leaves. As we begin the transition into winter and the colder months, hot drinks and comforting fall foods begin to call to us. I have included some of my favourite cannabis-infused recipes to be eaten in knit sweaters and warm socks.

    How To Make Canna Butter

    Almost every cannabis-infused recipe starts off with this dreamy butter so I suggest starting with a nice batch to get you going. It stores well in the fridge for about a month so making a slightly larger batch could work if you want to try a few different recipes (I know you do).

    Ingredients:Cannabis Recipes

    -1 cup Butter
    -1cup Decarboxylated Cannabis (This is an important but very simple part of the process. If you don’t decarboxylate your marijuana before adding it you will have a less effective, bitter mess of a canna-butter. Just grind your green buds coarsely and bake in the oven for about 45 minutes at
    275 F.)
    -1 cup Water

    Instructions:

    1. Bring 1 cup of water and 1 cup of water to a light simmer until the butter is fully melted.
    2. Add the decarboxylated flowers to the butter and simmer for 2-3 hours. Keep the heat low to protect the integrity of the final product, stirring occasionally.
    3. When your THC butter is finished simmering, strain it through a cheesecloth into a storage jar. Don’t get too rough with the cheesecloth and start squeezing your flowers or it may add some unwanted bitterness.
    4. Put your jar of melted butter into the fridge and wait until the butter sits on top of the excess water. Separate them and voila! Cannabis-infused butter for our groovy recipes.

    Cannabis Caramel Apples

    Now that we have our canna-butter we can hop right into these comforting recipes that will have you dreaming of pumpkin patches and hot mugs of cocoa by a fire. This first ooey-gooey caramel recipe takes me to fall fairs and packs a dreamy punch of THC.

    Ingredients:Cannabis Recipes

    -6 of Your Favorite Apples
    -1/3 Cup of Cannabis Butter (If you want the medicinal effects of this magical plant without the buzz then feel free to use CBD oil with a THC-free butter)
    -3/4 Cup of Brown Sugar
    -1/3 Cup of Corn Syrup
    -1/3 Cup of Sweetened Condensed Milk
    -2 Tsp of Vanilla Extract
    -Toppings! I like my caramel apples simple but this is where you can have fun and get creative. Coat the outside of your apples with nuts, candy, sprinkles; really anything you want.
    -Popsicle Sticks
    -Parchment Paper

    Instructions:

    1. Stick the popsicle sticks into your chosen apples and take turns dipping them in a pot of boiling water for about 5 seconds. This will remove any waxy skin residue. Dry them off with a towel and put them aside for later.
    2. Melt the butter with the brown sugar, corn syrup, and condensed milk over medium-high heat until it begins to boil. Make sure to stir consistently so that the bottom doesn’t burn and ruin your caramel.
    3. Cook the caramel on medium heat for 25-30 minutes or until your candy thermometer hits 248 F. Your mixture should be nice and thick at this point.
    4. Remove your caramel from the heat and stir in vanilla.
    5. Now that your delicious mixture is ready it’s time to dip the apples. If you’re adding topping make sure to roll them in while the caramel is still warm. Place all the apples onto parchment paper until they cool down.
    6. Each fall treat will contain about 40mg of THC. Could these be just the things to cause a “buzz” at your next fall party?

    Cannabis Thanksgiving Yams

    Delicious, spiced yams covered with marshmallows are one of my favourite dinner items at my grandmother’s Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts. She hasn’t been known to use cannabis, yet, but this is a great recipe to help you create a large enough appetite to get your fill of these favourites.

    Ingredients:Cannabis Recipes

    -4 Large Sweet Potatoes or Yams
    -1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
    -1/2 Cup All-Purpose Flour
    -1/2 Tsp Ground Cinnamon
    -1/8 Tsp Ground Nutmeg
    -1/4 Tsp Salt
    -2 Tbsp Chilled Canna-Butter
    -1/3 Cup Toasted, Chopped Pecans
    -1/3 Cup Mini Marshmallows

    Instructions:

    1. Bake your Yams for about 40 minutes at 375 F. When you can easily poke them through with a fork they are finished.
    2. Next is the topping which will really take these once-healthy root vegetables to the next level (holidays aren’t about healthy foods, obviously). Mix the brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt until they’re combined.
    3. Cut up the cold canna-butter and mix into your sugar-spice mixture with a fork. This should look like bread crumbs when you’re done with it. Stir in the pecans and move to the side for later.
    4. When your potatoes are cooked through take them out of the oven and slice them down the middle lengthwise. Stuff the potatoes generously with your crumb mixture and bake for another 15 minutes.
    5. When the sugar and butter are bubbling, add the mini marshmallows and bake for 6 minutes.
    6. When your marshmallow is gooey and brown, remove them from the oven. These snacks are best served immediately.

    Stoners Paradise Pumpkin Pie

    Don’t even try to tell me that the first thing you think about during that early fall breeze isn’t delicious, savoury pumpkin pie. The second the clock hit midnight on the first day of autumn I was at the store buying tinned pumpkin puree and rolling out pie crust. This recipe will tick all of the boxes and leave you wanting more.

    Ingredients:Cannabis Recipes

    -2 Large Eggs
    -1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
    -1/2 Cup Granulated Sugar
    -2 Tbsp Canna-Butter
    -2 Cans Pumpkin Puree
    -1 Can Evaporated Milk
    -2 Tsp Pumpkin Spice
    -Pie Crust (Store-bought or homemade both work)

    Instructions:

    1. Preheat your oven to 340 F while you prepare the pie.
    2. Beat together the eggs and sugar until it’s nice and fluffy.
    3. Add the canna-butter, pumpkin, milk, and spices and mix well.
    4. Pour your spiced pumpkin mixture into the pie crust and bake for about an hour.
    5. The pie should rise and then settle while it’s cooling so don’t be alarmed if it has a dome top after you pull it out.
    6. Top with whipped cream or ice cream and serve.
